Are You Fun to Workout With?

One of the highlights of training at Austin Aquatics and Sports Academy is getting to know all of the coaches on a personal level. They’re serious when they need to be, but also know how to lighten the mood and get their athletes to actually have a little fun during a training session! After all, success and happiness is a combination of hard work and enjoying the journey.

In this week’s blog, Coach Brendan Hansen asks the very important question, “Are you fun to workout with?” Do you take yourself way too seriously all the time? If so, here’s why it’s important to laugh a little every now and then.

Think about it. When you come to practice or a group fitness class, are you fun to workout with? I think one of the biggest challenges for a goal-driven and focused athlete is walking that line of being focused and having fun. If you sway too far either way, you are susceptible to high frustration levels, burnout and/or losing your focus.

When you read all the inspiring books on how to be successful or taking it to the next level, the words, Focused, Self-motivated, Intense, Driven, and Hardcore are just a few that will all appear multiple times. Yet, when you look back to the beginning of your journey, you realize that you started competing and training because it was fun. So how do you find that healthy balance again?

After training and competing for over 25 years, I have done pretty much every type of workout that’s out there and, even today, I strive to find new challenging ways to push myself. I truly believe that the group you workout with can push you, challenge you, motivate you, energize you and ultimately keep you balanced. That is- if you let it.

So back to my question, “Are you fun to workout with?” You need to be, because in my experience, an individual that truly participates in a group fitness program reaches their individual goals faster. Why, you ask? It’s simple. They have found the balance of focus and fun.

So, the next time you go to work out, bring the positive energy, challenge your group members, crack a few jokes, and you just might get way more out of the workout than you ever thought possible. The process to reaching your goals should be a fun one, but as humans we need to stay focused.

Find that balance and you will find success.
